Kidney Transplantation Workups

Sahel Ghana Limited is currently not offering kidney transplants. Sahel, however, supports patients who have decided to undertake a kidney transplant in or outside the country. In that regard, Sahel Health will support the patient with the following services:

  • The Sahel Health Medical Director or Nephrologist will undertake a clinical assessment of the patient and the proposed donor’s clinical appropriateness for the transplantation.
  • With the authorization of the patient, Sahel Health will engage directly with the offshore transplantation centre selected by the patient to confirm their requirements for the transplantation: this will include assessing which aspects of the transplantation workups will be undertaken in Ghana under the supervision of Sahel Health and the agreement with the offshore transplantation centre on the criteria for providing a ‘green-light’ for the patient, donor and caregiver(s) to travel;
  • Sahel Health will work with the patient and the offshore transplantation centre to undertake the workups required; the costs of all the diagnostics and laboratory tests for both the patient and the donor will be directly borne by the patient. Sahel Health will charge a flat fee (payable in Ghanaian Cedis at the relevant rate advised by Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited) for supervising the workups and issuing the appropriate reports to the offshore transplantation centre.
  • Sahel Health is available to support the patient and the offshore transplantation centre with any additional requirements needed to complete the process for a successful transplantation. We will make our best efforts to prepare the patient prior to the transplant. Nonetheless, it is the offshore transplantation centre that is responsible for verifying pre-operative workups, conducting additional testing upon arrival, and determining suitability.
